NEW! "HAYSTACKS" 36" x 48" Oil on canvas 2020
"The Wind" Oil on Canvas 36" x 48" 2020
The Wind is my newest addition to The Wind Series. Here, I try to demonstrate the incredible power of the wind along with the innocence of its intent. I hope you like it!
Earth II Oil on canvas 51" x 38" 1992
Earth II
Earth II is a much larger version of Earth, which was the first painting where I realized that I could paint a concept. I love our beautiful planet but we are not all protecting her like we should. Global warming is destroying the fragile balance in ecology causing wildfires, floods, deforestation, and extinction of species. “Earth II” shows balance, but the threat of global warming is upsetting that balance. I added another Earth in the center, not present in the original "Earth."

Path Through Blue Flowers Oil on canvas 30" x 30" 2019
Path Thru Blue Flowers is a new painting that I did from an absolutely beautiful photo of the same. It didn't turn out like the photograph but I'm satisfied that it conveys the wonder that I was striving to capture. If you look very closely, you might find some animals in the woods. NFS
Misty Mountains Oil on canvas 22" x 52" 2018
Recently shown at the beautiful Jansen Art Gallery's Juried Exhibit Lynden, Washington
I always loved driving through Montana because of the beautiful mountain views going on for hundreds of miles. That was my inspiration for Misty Mountains.
Lion Oil on Canvas 30" x 24" 2019
Lion is my second lion painting and smaller than "Old Lion" which was 36" x 48".
I personally like this lion better. He's a bit more realistic and he fits easily on most people's walls. I hope you like him.

Birth of the World Oil on Canvas 30" x 40" 2018
BIRTH OF THE WORLD is a progression of "In God's Hands" where the Earth seems to be flowing over the frame but the 'frame' is actually painted on the canvas. It is smaller than In God's Hands (below) and the first where I employ the surrealistic flow over a 'frame'. I did this because the Earth is in danger of getting away from us if we don't do something to protect her. She is our home!
In God's Hands Oil on canvas 40" x 52"
In God's Hands is one of my first paintings where I realized that I could paint a concept. That concept started the Series: Earth, Universe, and Higher Consciousness. With this series I endeavor to instill a sense of love and wonder into the viewer for our precious Earth and Universe, and a higher consciousness that makes us want to protect it. I made Limited Edition Prints of this painting and five other paintings in the series which you can find on the "Prints" page.
Moonlight Dancer is a gentle evening wind in the form of a beautiful woman that originated from a dancer in a rainbow colored dress. I let the painting decide how it would manifest and I am very happy it turned out like this! Moonlight Dancer is part of my very popular "Wind " series, which started with "The Wind", and sold to a woman in New York, NY. All the previous Winds have sold and these are a series of new ones. Life Under the Sun 36" x 36" Oil on canvas
Even though we live on the Earth, we are part of a Greater Whole. We are part of the Universe and an integral part of an infinite Higher Consciousness that permeates everything. In this painting, I am trying to represent the flow into and out of our earthly existence, but with the sure knowledge that we continue as part of the Cosmic Consciousness.
I drowned when I was seven years old and was brought back to life. I could see myself floating below the surface of the water. I re-lived my short life in reverse, and then I saw the tunnel. When I reached the end of the tunnel, I heard celestial music and saw the most beautiful light I had ever seen! It throbbed with life and more love than a million times as much as the greatest feeling of love any of us have ever felt! I have never been afraid of dying since that day. I think I might have seen God! "Life Under the Sun" is a little about that experience.

Into the Sun Oil on canvas 22" x 26"
Into the sun is a celebration of the life that 'Old Sol' gives us every day of our lives. Without its warmth, we would be a dark, frozen, lifeless ball in an empty area of space. Why were we blessed with an exactly perfect position in relation to the sun? Our planetary neighbor Mars is too cold and Venus is too hot. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants and Uranus and Neptune much too far from the sun. So I never forget how beautiful our planet is; liquid blue oceans, lakes and streams, green hills covered with vegetation, snow-capped mountains...life, even in the deserts and deepest oceans.
Into the Sun tries to reflect the vitality and fullness of life on Earth with the bold brushstrokes, texture over texture, and an overstated sun that makes it all possible.

Yellow Brick Road Oil on canvas 28" x 28"
Where are we going? What are we looking for? Why are we looking? How are we going to get there? These are the eternal questions we ask ourselves at different periods of our lives. The future and the unknown demand us to contemplate these questions.
Once man thought the world was flat, then the center of the Universe. Now we know that we are but a single planet orbiting around a medium-sized star on the edge of the Milky Way, a small galaxy of many galaxies in an immense Universe with billions of stars! We are made of flesh and blood, made of cells that are made of elements that were made in stars. The more we learn the more we realize how much we don't know. Wouldn't it be easy if we could just follow the Yellow Brick Road like Dorothy and ask the Wizard of Oz for the answers?

Panther in Tree Oil on Canvas 29" x 29"
When I was at the Brookfield Zoo I came upon an amazing tree with a huge trunk and limbs. I knew I had to paint it! I took some pictures of my grandson climbing the tree and one showed him lying on the branch where the panther is in the painting. It was very cold that day and he was wearing a huge winter jacket and hood that covered everything but his face. So I decided to put a panther on that branch instead. I think he looks pretty impressive up there.

"Lynne with Dogs as The Wind" by Zachia Middlechild oil on canvas 30" x 30" 2011
As you can see, this is not your typical portrait. Lynne is my neighbor and close friend who has two lovable 'babies', Zoie and Gizmo who she absolutely adores. Because she is so beautiful, passionate and loving, I wanted to capture her as a powerful element of nature with her faithful dogs running by her side. Every person has an essence that permeates their being. I try to capture that essence in my portraits. $869.US

"In the Woods" Oil on canvas 48" x 60"
"In the Woods" is a magical forest where animals are hiding. Can you find them?
In the Woods where the magic grows
You become part of life and the natural flow
You commune with the wild, the timid and meek,
You're vital, alive in the knowledge you seek.
In the trees where the spirits glow,
In the heart where the universe grows,
Here the creatures live and play
And know how the pulse of nature flows.

"Mountain in the Sky" Oil on canvas 7 ft x 7 ft
This HUGE painting was the result of my temporary move to Chicago in the 90's. It is almost entirely flat there and I missed the beautiful mountains of the Pacific Northwest. So I prepared the largest canvas (actually two canvases) to bring mountains into my living room. I also wanted to depict the geochemical water cycle which shows the snow falling on the mountain tops, running down while collecting the minerals and nutrients from the earth, and carrying them to the oceans where the water evaporates and returns to the atmosphere.
"Mountain in the Sky" is the result of that need for mountains in my life.
Murphy Oil on canvas
Murphy is my sister-in-law's golden lab who loves the water more than anything else! My husband and I agreed it would make a great birthday present to paint his portrait for her. Murphy is getting up there in years
and we wanted her to have a permanent portrait of this sweet and loyal member of their family.
There is a shallow sandbar in the gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida
where our sister and brother-in law live; people like to anchor their boats there and stroll around in the ocean. This is where I put Murphy, even though he would actually be up to his neck out there. I'm sure he would love this portrait, too! NFS

"City" Oil on canvas 36" x 48"
City started as a painting of Chicago from Lake Michigan looking across Lake Shore Drive, but as the painting progressed, I got bored and decided I needed to capture the feeling of the city. Chicago is vibrant and alive, growing and evolving constantly with each year! This is what I tried to represent here in an organic view of the city. The colored streaks in the foreground are cars racing down Lake Shore Drive. The universe in the lake and sky show how Chicago is a living part of the Whole.

"Leaf Song" Oil on canvas 30" x 20"
I like to walk through natural landscapes and one day I was standing beside a cool pond on a hot summer day. There were graceful water plants waving gently among branches that had fallen into the water. It gave me such a peaceful feeling. When I got home, I painted Leaf Song with the cool blue water, calm and serene; kind of like a goddess of the pond.

"Fire Leaf" Oil on Canvas 40" x 30"
Fire Leaf started as a very strange dream. It wasn't an action dream like most are; absolutely nothing happened! It was just an image of a kind of palm leaf floating in golden space, just sort of hanging there. I remember thinking, "What does this mean?" The dream continued for a while and nothing happened. When I woke up the next morning, the image of the leaf was vivid in my mind. What did it mean? I decided to try to paint it to see if something would evolve. Try as I might, nothing happened; I struggled for days! Then someone suggested that I approach it as a painting rather than a dream. This is what evolved, and is one of my favorite paintings.

TREES Original Oil on canvas 36" x 48"
"Trees" is a more traditional painting with very heavy texture and depth in the trunks. You can actually feel the rough bark. The shallow pond is smooth. The wonderful aspect of this painting was discovered long after it was completed and hanging on my living room wall. When the midday sun shone on the painting, the scene became midday as well, and when the sun waned, "Trees" transformed into dusk. It's quite magical.

"Two Zebras" by Zachia Middlechild 36" x 48" oil on canvas 2011
Two Zebras is part of the Wildlife Series that is ongoing.
Here, it shows the interconnectedness of all life. Although the African doesn't 'grow' in the bushes, all humans originated on that great continent. Whether we are human, zebra, lion, gazelles, trees and grass, or oceans of fish... we are all part of the same living Earth and Universe.
"Spiral" by Zachia Middlechild oil on canvas 31" x 31" 2011
,,
"Spiral" is one of my few abstract paintings. I got the idea while I was watching Star Trek. My process in painting is to first get the idea for something I "must" paint. Then I decide on a size and make the stretcher in my workshop. After the corners dry, I stretch the canvas and apply at least three heavy coats of gesso, an artist's primer. That has to dry completely before I can start painting and I'm usually very impatient during this waiting period. When I finally start painting, I sketch the main composition in thin paint and quickly get down to work on the whole. I usually finish the major work in two weeks. Then comes the longer process of looking, thinking, and refining. This phase usually takes at least three to four months and sometimes even longer. All artists have some paintings that just don't work. I once had a painting that I had worked on for over six months and I knew it was good but there was something missing. Finally, I put it in a closet because I couldn't stand looking at it anymore! One day I took it out to throw it away but took a picture of it first. As soon as I saw the photograph, I knew what it needed. I added the changes and was able to finish the painting to my satisfaction more than a year after I had started!
